NHL announces a Slam Dunk style shootout at All Star Game Skills Competition

January 19, 2008 By: Chris Lee Category: NHL No Comments →

The NHL announced yesterday that they will be going to an NBA Slam Dunk style shootout at the Skills Competition on All Star weekend. The new chance to the style will award players points for style not whether or not they can score. This new style will be in effect in a couple of weeks at the up coming game in Atlanta Georgia. The NHL officials will be looking at the rosters this week and hopefully by next weekend they will be able to tell the players who will be shooting so they have some time to practice for the contest as this isn’t something that is done at practice everyday.

Tell me what you think.

On Thursday Alexander Ovechkin made history when he signed the largest contract in NHL history not only did he sign the largest contract in NHL history but he did it by himself without even discussing it with his agent. Ovechkin (22) signed a whooping 13 year 124 million dollar contract. Which is about 9.5 million dollars a year. The only player in the league making more the him next season will be Ottawa’s Dany Heatley.

Sens win Best vs. Best

January 13, 2008 By: Chris Lee Category: NHL No Comments →

sens.jpgThe big game in the NHL last night was the Best of the West the Detroit Red Wings against the Best of the East the Ottawa Senators. The game showedwings.jpg Ottawa score an early goal on the power play just a minute into the game. The in the second period the Senators got another to go up two heading into the third period. Then in the third period the Wings scored a couple to tie the game and it didn’t look good for the sens having blown another 2 goal game. That’s the second time in two games. The sens got a late power play goal from Alfredsson to win the game 3-2, however that win came at a very huge lose. During the game Dany Heatley collided with a Red Wings player then hitting the boards causing a separated shoulder. The Sens winger is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. If you ask me I’d say that I’d have rather seen them lose this game then see them lose Heatley for a extended period of time.

No Room In the Game

Steve DownieDean McAmmondOn Tuesday Night the Ottawa Senators were playing the Philadelphia Flyers in an exhibition game at the Scotia Bank Place. Dean McAmmond had just released the puck in ” Death Valley ” ( is the spot on the ice where players are most vulnerable to big hits) and was blind sided by 20 year old Steve Downie. Steve Downie left his feet to deliver the body check and hit him in the head leaving McAmmond motionless on the ice for several minutes. When paramedics got there they moved McAmmond off the ice on a stretcher.

My opinion is that there is no way Downie should be playing hockey again this year. He should be suspended for the entire year and possibly more. The reason for this is because he has had a problem with dirty plays before and he should not be allowed to continuously make a mockery of the game not just for the other players but for his own safety as well. As Brian McGratton said Tuesday night after the game “He’ll get what’s coming to him next time we play him, that’s for sure.”
